The University of Fort Hare seeks to appoint suitable qualified and experienced candidates for the above-mentioned permanent position in the Research and Innovation Office, Govan Mbeki Research and Development Centre (GMRDC). The main purpose of the position is to enhance research capacity, productivity, quality and impact at the University of Fort Hare (UFH) in line with the UFH strategic goal 2 which is to “Build the University’s Research and Innovation Profile”. The position strengthens research and innovation capacity of researchers, especially early career academics.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Masters Degree;
  • At least 10 years research experience in Higher Education environment
  • At least 5 years research management in Higher Education environment

  • Good leadership skills
  • A high level of professional and ethical conduct;
  • Computer competency in the Microsoft bouquet;
  • Good interpersonal skills;
  • Communication skills;
  • The applicant must be self-motivated, be able to work under pressure and should have the ability to multi-task;
  • The successful applicant must be able to work in a team, handle a variety of responsibilities, work with a high degree of discretion and independence and meet tight deadlines;
  • Must have a client-service orientation.

Duties and Responsibilities Include:

  • Manage research capacity strengthening programmes for academic staff that include:
    • University Capacity Development Grant (UCDG) programme
    • Research capacity strengthening programme that caters for all fields in all Faculties
    • Early Career Academic Mentorship Programme
    • Academic Exchange programme to acquire research related skills critical for research productivity, quality and impact
    • NRF-rating programme for academic staff
    • Oversee application, selection and awarding processes
    • Compiling pertinent data and do analytics
    • Designing and implementing appropriate interventions based on data and analytics in order to address needs prevailing on the ground.
    • Compiling information and statistics required for reporting purposes
    • Contributing content for progress reports written by the Director (Research and Innovation) for internal UFH purposes and for external Funders
  • Manage administrative activities that support Research Niche Areas, Research Institutes and Research Centres, and the duties will include:
    • Managing disbursement of institutional financial support provided by UFH
    • Tracking progress and compile deliverables produced by the entities
    • Monitoring compliance with conditions of funding
    • Compiling information and statistics on a continuous basis
    • Participating in the auditing of the entities
    • Contributing content for progress reports written by the Director: Research and Innovation
  • Manage research-related events that enhance quality and impact of research conducted at UFH
  • Draft adverts for the VC’s Emerging Researcher Medal and VC’s Senior Researcher Medal awards annually
  • Disseminate adverts approved by the Director widely
  • Manage nominations from Faculties, Research Institutes and Research Centres
  • Spearhead the review process by a VC’s awards panel
  • Communicate the outcomes

  • Organise the annual ceremony for the winners of the VC’s awards
  • Provide administrative support to the Week of Excellence Committee
  • Participate in the Week of Excellence Logistics Committee
  • Provide administrative support in the implementation of the Week of Excellence
  • Provide pertinent research-related information and statistics for the UFH Research Report
  • Provide administrative support in the development, printing and disbursement of the UFH Research Report
  • Managing staff members who report to this position and render University servic
